LETTERS & CLIPPINGS

(Pono sent this happy letter reporting good results with DIS, an organization of genealogists interested in Sweden roots.  The letter was translated and published in the DIS publication "Diskulogen".  Here are the English and Swedish versions side by side.)

I think I just found genealogist- heaven (or at least hog-heaven)!

"Olof Cronberg got the following e-mail from a satisfied DIS member (I have taken the liberty of translating it to Swedish - Björn)"

After getting a few positive opinions on DISBYT, I joined, found a whole bunch of relies, contacted one researcher (out of three tries), and eventually submitted a GEDCOM with over 1000 people (about 700 born in Sweden).  The report on matches gave me 1349 total matches, with 68 matches at level 7 and 14 at level 8.

To quote “Level 7 – Full name, place and one year are identical. There are also hits with family members.” and “Level 8 - Full name, place and both years are identical. There are also hits with family members.”

With the report, I got a new username and password and can now surf the trees (the elusive “family” function).  In the last hour, I found five more generations on one branch!

Now, the other side of the coin.  I know full well that I will not be (nor should I be) satisfied until I verify this data.  In fact, in looking at the DISBYT data I see lots of discrepancies.  I fully expect to have to correct many of my “findings”, but I hope that some of my data will prevail as well.

Oh, the wonders of the web!  Thanks to Odin, Thor, etc. but especially Olof (DISBYT is his middle name)!

Now the commercial – join, send GEDCOMs – I want more matches.

Aloha,
Pono
